Presstv.com

Press TV is a state-funded, 24-hour satellite news channel operated by the Iranian Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).  Its website is Presstv.com (whois).

The English-language channel, launched in Tehran in 2007, is largely viewed as an Iranian government propaganda outlet.

Press TV acknowledges it is state-funded but claims it is not “state-controlled.”  Iran’s Constitution, however, mandates that “all broadcasting must exclusively be government-operated."1

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) described Press TVas the Iranian government's primary propaganda tool to promote a wide range of pernicious anti-Semitic conspiracy theories in English to a worldwide audience."2

In 2011, Press TV almost lost its British broadcasting license after airing an interview of Newsweek correspondent Maziar Bahari while he was jailed in 2009 by Iranian authorities.

Bahari said after his release that his jailors scripted the interview and he was forced to cooperate under the threat of execution.  Press TV failed to disclose to viewers the interview was recorded under duress.3

Western journalists appear to not pay much attention to the news channel.  The Associated Press mentioned Press TV only once in the past five years (2008-2013).  The New York Times made reference to the TV channel five times during this period.  Press TV was shut out completely by the Washington Post.

While Press TV’s articles are not republished by the Western media, they are reposted in their entirety on MOIS attack websites. Examples include:

Iran-Interlink.org

    • “Israel pushed U.S. to delist Mojahedin Khalq (MKO, MEK, Rajavi cult) terrorist group – Syria unrest: The price of defying the West.”  (3/29/2013)

Tehran Times

Tehran Times (whois) is an English language newspaper established in 1979, following the Islamic Revolution.  In 2002, the newspaper set up a news service that later was renamed the Mehr News Agency (MNA).

Tehran Times describes itself as a “reliable news source for hundreds of foreign media outlets.”  But in reality, news outlets only on occasion make reference to an item from the newspaper.

Over a five year period (2008-13), Tehran Times was mentioned ten times by the New York Times, three times by the Washington Post, and five times by the Associated Press.

Articles from the Tehran Times are often displayed on MOIS attack websites.  Examples of stories from the paper appearing on Irandidban.com are:

    • “Intl. Reporters Visit Camp Ashraf For the First Time.”  (No date)
    • “MKO Says Last Convoy Will Move From Camp Ashraf on Sept. 12.” (No date)
    • “Maryam Rajavi’s Interpreter Says Tareq al-Hashemi Had Ties With MKO.” (No Date)

Mehr News Agency

The Mehr News Agency was established in 2002 by Tehran Times (whois).  MNA and Tehran Times are both managed by the Islamic Ideology Dissemination Organization (IIDO).

Articles from the paper are rarely reprinted by legitimate news organizations.  In most cases, only an item from a story will be mentioned, at which time the MNA is usually referred to as a “state-run” or a “semi-official” voice of Iranian regime.

Over a recent five year period (2008-13), MNA was mentioned in 160 Associated Press articles.  The New York Times, during this same period, mentioned the MNA 92 times and the Washington Post 63 times.

Mehr News Agency stories are regularly republished in full on MOIS attack websites.  As an example, the Nejat Society posted the entire MNA story, “MEK, A Hated Entity in the View of Iranians,” on January 6, 2013.
